Are We Green?

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

Are We Green?

Soap Sushi is committed to doing everything we can to reduce waste due to our packaging and shipping materials. Here's what we're doing to help, and some ideas about how you can help as well:
  • We use USPS Priority Mail boxes. USPS packaging products have been awarded Cradle to Cradle Certification at the Silver level. The USPS also utilizes recycled materials in their boxes and envelopes. We here at Soap Sushi recycle Priority Mail boxes when shipping items to non-customers. Customers are encouraged to also recycle shipping boxes by either placing the boxes in recycling receptacles or reusing them.
  • We strive to be as paperless as possible in our office. Instead of printing our receipts and order confirmations, we print them to files and save them electronically.
  • We package our products in as little packaging as possible, and the packaging we use is recyclable. We have researched our shrink film and have determined that it falls into category 4. If your facility accepts category 4, then it will accept our shrink wrap and cello packaging.
  • Packing Peanuts! We have never purchased a packing peanut. Ever. But, you will receive packages that contain packing peanuts from us. We have bags and bags of packing peanuts saved from shipments we receive from vendors that utilize them. We don't mean to offend you by passing them on to you. If you're having trouble recycling them, we'd like to refer you to the Peanut Hotline, the national reuse program for plastic packing peanuts. If you can't find someone local to adopt your peanuts, email us, and we'll take them back.
  • Packing Paper. We do use packing paper from time-to-time. It, too, has been reused from shipments we have received. We also purchase packing paper that is comprised of 75% to 100% recycled content. We encourage our customers to recycle the paper they receive from us.
  • Bubble Wrap. We need to protect our shipments with bubble wrap sometimes, and at times we use padded mailers. Bubble wrap is difficult to recycle because of its nylon content. We encourage our customers to reuse the bubble wrap or padded mailer. Additionally, if a UPS Store or similar shipping facility is nearby, you can ask them if they will take the bubble wrap; they have been known to accept it for use in their stores.
  • Our "Take Out" Containers. We use two types of plastic Chinese-style take out containers. The frosted version is made of polypropylene, and is recyclable where facilities exist for category 5. Alternately, we suggest you reuse it yourself as a gift box or other fun use, such as a container for pens or pencils on your desk. The clear version is PET, the same plastic used in soda bottles. It is readily recyclable in most communities.

We are all concerned about reducing our impact on the environment. Soap Sushi is doing everything we can to avoid unnecessary waste. If you have any other ideas about how we can do better, then contact us and pass along your ideas!
